A Fisherman Told Me...

“A fisherman told me that his cousin never used to get seasick at all. But then he had kids, and suddenly he did. I thought this was fascinating. It made me wonder whether seasickness isn’t somehow connected to things that tie you to land....perhaps it functions a bit like homesickness in that way.” Lamorna Ash

Ways to say goodbye

Where have I been all my life?

The house becomes a place of tiny skies, a patchwork of views that cannot be joined. Looking out, in all directions the weather is more noticeable than before and less relevant.

The sofa faces west ...

The sofa faces west. Through the window the rain runs down the hill to the A41. It is cold, sometime in February. The storm is coming, trees are tense, a shutter loose.

Inside, the music streams Joel Virgel, The Platters, and Gillian Welch, a mood of love and regret - somethings are meant to be. Time lingers and hangs about waiting, surrounded by partially read weekend papers and slowly cooked joints.

It is a Sunday gathering. Things are about the change.

‘Art is the supreme game which the will plays with itself.’ S.Sontag

The sound of covering pan lids, unstacked plates and the weighted bell, all clear-aired reminders that the city is on the move again.

There are two Roman words: sfizio meaning a “whim, or literally something that you don’t really need. But it has come to mean a delicious thing, usually fried in oil, that you absolutely must eat. The second is sargarozzare, which is defined as “to consume or throw back with joy, and with no intention of stopping.”

Rachel Roddy Tales from an Italian Kitchen

‘Well, what Tony should have been thinking, I guess, and what we should all be thinking - although we can’t live that way - is that life is really short. And there are good times in it and there are bad times in it. And that we don’t know why we are here, but we do know that 20 miles up it’s freezing cold, it’s a freezing cold universe,  and here we have this thing called love, which is our only defence, really, against all that cold, and that’s a very brief interval and that, when it’s over, I think you’re probably always blindsided by it.’

David Chase on the final episode of the Sopranos

Art makes....

Art makes physical a view point, feeling or response to the world, or sense of ourselves within it. It can also be a material play, creating meaning through haptic conversation and dialogues with stuff, which then echoes existing works using a similar language.

BRASS NOTES

tomorrow’s fine

tell me later

all is well

looks like it

can’t wait

and you

These ’notes’ are proposed to be situated in the arboretum, to be found or encountered. They are curious and differ from other lists of names, dates or phrases of valour or loss seen on the plaques and monuments across the site. They are notes of short, affectionate reassurances and confirmations taken from fragments of personal phone calls, texts or letters, which suggest continuity and stability. Deep etched into brass blocks, such partial conversations between lovers, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and friends become memorialised - something slight that was said, written or typed, now permanently holds a poignant significance.

Each short phrase is purposely everyday and prosaic, ones we all regularly use to reinforce love and share news and experience, where ‘we will speak later’ is captured evidence of I’m still here and everything is fine. They are endings to other expected beginnings. However, when this fails, when death happens, we are left with the fragments, an eternal silence of no response. There is no more.

We carry such texts in our pockets and in boxes, lost for words.

Tomorrow is fine, can’t wait, and you.....

The Dust Footprint

The dust footprint on the moon stays exactly as the first second of pressurised release. Of anything in our world, lives, history or even faith, it is eternal. There is no breeze from the Sea of Tranquility to comb it over or fill it in, nor paleontological revisit to verify to neigh-sayers that it actually happened . It is simply there and we are here, for now.

A photograph is a certificate of existence that is no longer fixed, our images now held in clouds which can disperse as quickly as they form, the evidence of our presence in the world, which seems more ‘instant’ and urgent, evermore precarious. It is airborne, unseen or unknown, like magic or religion, spectres or apparitions that suggest that we are here….somewhere.

BUT WHEN FROM A LONG DISTANCE…..

"But when from the long distant past nothing subsists, after people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, taste and smell alone, more fragile but more enduring, more immaterial, more persistent, remain poised a long time, like souls, remembering, hoping, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unflinchingly, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of their recollection."

WHEN ITARU SASAKI LOST HIS COUSIN….

When Itaru Sasaki lost his cousin in 2010, he decided to build a glass-panelled phone booth in his hilltop garden with a disconnected rotary phone inside for communicating with his lost relative, to help him deal with his grief.

Only a year later, Japan faced the horrors of a triple disaster: an earthquake followed by a tsunami, which caused a nuclear meltdown. Sasaki’s coastal hometown of Otsuchi was hit with 30-foot waves. Ten percent of the town died in the flood.

Sasaki opened his kaze no denwa or “wind phone” to the now huge number of people in the community mourning the loss of loved ones. Eventually word spread and others experiencing grief made the pilgrimage from around the country. It is believed that 10,000 visitors journeyed to this hilltop outside Otsuchi within three years of the disaster.

Gaslighting.......

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilise the victim and delegitimise the victim's belief.

Funerary masons in Stratford......

Funerary masons in Stratford are frequently requested to carve unseen messages on the invisible base edge of headstones. It is reported that some are loving, even using emojis, whilst others are explicit, curt and unforgiving.

Since the 1980's, scientists have been tracking a whale who sings at a sonic frequency higher than any other whale of its species: at 52 hertz, just above the lowest note on the tuba. It sings songs no one answers...maybe it is deaf, maybe a genetic mutation.

Holy night, you sink down; The dreams flow down, too, Like your moonlight through the rooms, Through the people's silent chests. They listen softly with desire; They call, when day awakens: Come back, holy night! Sweet dreams, come back!

Nacht und Träume (Franz Schubert)

Every German girl......

In the 1940's, every German girl over the age of 14 had to join the Bund Deutcher Meidel (BDM). Members had to be able to throw a ball 12m, complete a 2hr march, swim 100m and know how I make a bed.

Ernest Becker - terror management theory - The Denial of Death. We hide from death through proximal defences (diets, fitness regimes and unhealthy behaviours such as smoking and driving too fast that make us feel immortal and mastery over our fate) and distal defences (cultural such as religion, art and insurance policies). Necessary otherwise in a continual existential crisis. Why do anything if there was nothing more than life than death.
